Daydreams
My Precious Child,
I daydream about you a lot. I wonder if you'll get your dad's puppy dog eyes. I wonder if you'll love music as much as you seem to in my belly. I wonder how often you'll keep me awake at night, pacing the floor, praying that you'll pull into the driveway safe and sound like my dad used to do for me. I wonder who you will fall in love with and if they will ever understand just how incredible you are. I pray they look at you with the kind of unconditional love that I see in your father's eyes when he looks at me.
I drive by what will be your elementary school and I wonder how I will take it when I drop you off for your first day. What will your favorite subject be? Will you love school like I did or dread it like your daddy? I wonder what it will be that lights a fire in your heart, making you chase and yearn and strive in a way that you never thought imaginable. Will it be justice? Education? Competition? Equality? Whatever it is and whoever you are, remember that I will love you. Every. Single. Second.
There are going to be those times when you stomp up to your room, slam the door behind you, and sit in your rage, insisting that there has never been a worse mother than me. If that never happens, pigs will be flying outside your window. Oddly enough, I daydream about those moments too. I wonder what our first big fight will be about. I wonder if you'll pick up the passive aggressive tendencies of my youth. Lord I hope not. Be strong and fair. Fight with your truth. Be honest with yourself and with others. We are not always going to agree. In those moments, try to remember that you are my most precious gift. Whatever I do, I do out of the most powerful love I have ever known. Trust me when I say that the slamming door scenario is inevitable. And it's normal. And I will love you through it. Every single second, I will love you.
Love Always and Forever,
Mom
