Stay Wild
My Precious Child,
You are a mystery wrapped in a riddle. Your Nana uses that expression and it took raising you for me to understand it. You change from day to day and even moment to moment. You can be timid and cautious then fiery and brave. You can cling to my leg and then push me away. You can learn a song in seconds but refuse potty training for months.
You are a paradox, always adjusting your sails to suit your own ever-changing instincts and motivations and - dang it - I respect you for that. Though at 2 years old, those qualities leave me at my wit's end for a portion of the day, they are the exact same things I never want to change in you.
You are bold. When you are 15 and someone pressures you to do something you're uncomfortable with, that boldness is going to be the strength you need to stand up and walk away.
You are tenacious. When you are 25 years old, that tenacity is going to be the very thing that fuels you. It will help you end relationships that are no good for you and sustain the ones that are worth your energy.
You are intuitive and fierce. That combination is a game-changer and it is exactly what the world needs. When you see injustice happening, use your superpowers of empathy and courage to reach out into despair and say, "You're not alone."
Stay wild, little one. Stay unpredictable. Stay free. Stay true to all that you are - not just the glitzy glamorous qualities. You are a combination of all that is complicated and messy and honest and I wouldn't have it any other way.
Love Always and Forever,
Mom
