Daddy
My Precious Child,
You have a daddy. I'm not sure you will fully understand the important distinction between a daddy and a father until you get a little older but, let me tell you sweet girl, a daddy is a blessing beyond measure.
You have a daddy who will sit with you on the four-wheeler, taking wild adventures around gravel roads in search of flowers. He's a man who is teaching you the importance of curiosity and wonder, hard work and courage, generosity and faith. He will bring out the best in you while inspiring you to be even better. He will love you steadily and loyally, through your best and worst days.
As you grow into the beautiful person you are becoming, remember to hold his hand from time to time. When we drop you off at school for the first time, I hope you hug him with your whole body. When you are mad at him for telling you no (for whatever reason he has), please try to think twice before yelling the words "I hate you" because, despite his apparent strength and level head, your daddy has a tender heart with a special spot just for you. When you go to your first dance, pose for a picture with you daddy even if he acts like he doesn't need one. He does.
And when you're falling in like or lust or love and you're wondering if this person is the right person, I hope you remember that there are two people who loved you first. Day one. Minute one. Your daddy and I loved you as a squishy pink 7 lb. 14 oz. newborn. From that moment on, we have devoted our lives to making sure you feel loved, respected, and listened to. Anyone worthy of your time and love better darn well be treating you that way too.
In the quiet moments of your life, when you are wondering who you are, when you are questioning your worth or your purpose, imagine how you look through your daddy's eyes. Wonderful. Beautiful. Capable. Funny. Brilliant. Worthy of all good things. You're his girl and he's your daddy. It's the honor of my life to watch that story unfold.
