President Trump
My Precious Children,
You will know come to know home as the tall cream house with the big red doors on 5th Street. But beyond this town and beyond this state, we have a much larger home. We live in a place called the United States. You are Americans - a title you were born with and should be grateful for every day. America is a beautiful place full of opportunity and possibility.
Tomorrow at noon, a man named Donald Trump will put his hand on a Bible and speak an oath that will make him the 45th President of the United States. He will be the official leader of our nation. He will be responsible to make important decisions that can impact the course of history.
I need to be honest with you and I say that the news of his election back in November did not give me a whole lot of hope. I question his ability to lead a diverse nation. I question his character. I question his authenticity. I question his intention. I question his heart. He has said things that I find insensitive, unfair, crude, egotistical, and unkind. His words against all sorts of minority groups, including but not limited to my own - women - have made my skin crawl and my heart ache.
He is not somebody I would have ever voted for or hoped to be my President. But tomorrow that is exactly what he will become.
So I pray for him. I pray for him every day.
I pray that he is humbled by the role of the Presidency. I pray that the daunting responsibilities of the job is able to shrink his ego and that he is able to gain a perspective based in compassion rather than fear. I pray that in "Making America Great Again" he comes to understand that our strength lies in our diversity.
I pray that he abandons the idea that he is superior to anybody and embraces the notion that he can learn from others. I pray that he surrounds himself with people that can advise him and guide him to do what is right not only for the elite but for all Americans, particularly those who are struggling.
I pray that he will someday look into a diverse crowd of Americans and see all of us - black, white, Latino, blue collar, white collar, disabled, young, old, male or female - and appreciate every single one of us for the unique qualities and contributions we bring to this country.
So long as he is my President, I will pray these things.
And this is my plea to you, my beautiful babies: don't be discouraged by setbacks like the one so many of us felt on the evening of November 8, 2016. Don't give up. Don't let disappointment sit in your gut like a pile of bricks. Let it serve, instead, as the gasoline in your tank - motivating you, moving you, pushing you towards justice, equality, and progress.
Rise above jokes at others' expense. Rise above "locker room talk." Rise above Twitter wars. Rise above these things, even if the President of our nation does not.
Rise above.
Love Always and Forever,
Mom
