Nuggets of Knowledge (Part 1)
My Precious Child,
I have thoughts. Lots of thoughts. Too many maybe. Naaah, cancel that. There's no such thing as too many thoughts. But I do have a lot going on in this ol' noggin. And lately my thoughts center mostly around you - your safety, your health, your happiness, and how freaking adorable you are.
Seriously... so stinkin' cute. You do this thing when you're super tired where you arch your back and make this little duck face... oh sorry. I'm rambling. What was I saying? Oh yeah, thoughts. I really want to be that thoughtful mom who passes down little tid bits of wisdom and lessons I learned the hard way. But I'm not always so eloquent. I stumble on my words and struggle to say exactly what I want to how I want to. Written words come far more easily for me. So I started a list - Nuggets of Knowledge, if you will. Ten for now and more to come, so bare with me.
1. You're going to be a brilliant person. Never dumb yourself down to be accepted. It's more than okay to shine, sweetheart.
2. Generic brands are almost always the same product with a different label. Save where you can. That said, a few things are worth spending the extra money: toilet paper, socks, and olive oil.
3. Add an extra 1/4 teaspoon of salt to cookie recipes. Trust.
4. Music is super cheap therapy. I started your must-listen list already. Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Johnny Cash, Adele, Joshua Radin, and Ingrid Michaelson - just to name a few. I'll try to be patient when you go through your teeny bopper years but I'm not promising anything.
5. Buy yourself flowers. They look nice. They smell nice. You deserve good lookin, good smellin things! If you're not big on flowers (which would be so weird by the way but whatever floats your boat) then please buy yourself a couple succulents at least. It's good for the soul to have some plants around.
6. The world consists of far more than lakes and prairie. Go out. Wander. Travel to the places you dream about. If your heart brings you back, I'll be here to hug you. If not... there's always Skype and FaceTime or whatever they think up next.
6. That said - you better come home to visit every once in a while. You make my world so much brighter. Don't make me go too long without your light.
7. Find work you that you truly enjoy. You get this one life; don't waste it doing something you hate. Show up early. Work hard. And when you're done for the day, leave it there.
8. Allow yourself one mental health day every month. Sit on your butt. Watch TV all day. Dance naked around the living room. Order your favorite takeout dishes from 3 different restaurants. But hey! Don't let me limit you. These are just suggestions. Soak up every glorious, lazy second of that day without an ounce of guilt. If you work hard, you deserve to rest (and rest hard) now and then.
9. Coconut oil works for damn near everything. Health. Beauty. Cooking. You name it. Keep it on hand.
10. If you love someone, tell them. Don't hold it in. Don't wait. Don't assume there will be a better time later. Say it the moment you feel it. Then say it again. "I love you" never gets old.
I love you. I love you. Oh I love you.
Love Always and Forever,
Mom
P.S. Please don't grow up too fast. I'm going to miss this.
