Speak
My Precious Child,
As I type, you are rocking in a Graco swing, sucking your thumb, and dreaming little baby dreams. It's simple. It's beautiful. It's safe. But someday, in a future that will come far too quickly for my liking, you will be grown. You will find your place in this messy, wonderful world and I will be so incredibly proud of you.
But it pains me to think I will also be scared. This world can be truly terrifying at times. The most recent headlines include rape. Domestic abuse. A missing NDSU student. Child abuse. I look at you swinging back and forth in your swing, your long eye lashes resting against your chubby cheeks. My heart hurts to think that each one of those victims is someone's baby.
But please, my sweet girl, don't let fear rule your heart. I want you to be brave and bold. Stand eye to eye with those who try to put you down. Challenge those you attempt to make you feel inferior. Never for a second forget that you deserve love and respect. Show those same things to everyone you meet, no matter how difficult that can be.
When you see somebody being mistreated, I want you to show compassion. It is a tendency in our society to blame the victim for what was done to them. When you hear people dismissing rape with questions like, "What was she wearing?" or "How drunk was she?" I quite frankly want you to have the courage to call people on their shit. Don't let ignorance slide.
Love doesn't hurt, baby. We learn through our maker that love is patient and love is kind. Love will never put you down or make you feel inferior. Love will hold your hand and walk with you through your darkest days. Love never fails.
So be strong. And remember that sometimes being strong requires asking for help. You are smart. You are beautiful. You are worthy of love. That deserves to be repeated. You are worthy of love. I want you to know that not only for yourself but also for others. I have heard this expression, "Speak up, even if your voice shakes" and to that I say: YES! Be a warrior for love, baby.
Love Always and Forever,
Mom
